It is the word that defines what Maryland men’s soccer is all about. For the program’s entire existence, it has competed for championships, produced countless professional and international players and boasted the best fans in the sport. Maryland has captured four national championships, 36 conference championships and churned out both high level professional players and more importantly, high level people.
Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski’s teams play an entertaining, attacking style that has entertained Terp fans for over 25 years. At the center of that identity is Cirovski’s Performance Pyramid, which promotes the phrase “Play Like Champions. The Terps have done just that, becoming the most successful program in college soccer since the turn of the century with the trophies and alumni list to prove it.
Maryland plays in front of the most raucous atmosphere in college soccer at storied Ludwig Field. The Terps have ranked in the top eight in the nation in attendance in 18 straight seasons, including first in 2019. The legend of “Ludwig Friday’s” has grown throughout the last decade, with over eight thousand Terp fans selling out their home pitch to walk Maryland play. The notorious student fan group, “The Crew”, has established itself as the most well known college soccer fan section in the nation.
Maryland has produced some of the best players in the history of college soccer, including national players of the year award winners Patrick Mullins and Jason Garey. The Terps have produced 34 All-Americans and 50 first-team all-conference selections which has produced 49 MLS SuperDraft selections and seven MLS homegrown signees.
The Maryland men’s soccer program is the preeminent producer of professional soccer talent among college teams in the United States. Terps have participated in three consecutive FIFA World Cups and 12 Terps have earned caps for the US Men’s National Team.
Some of the most prominent players in the last 20 years of American soccer, including Taylor Twellman, Maurice Edu, Robbie Rogers, Clarence Goodson, Omar Gonzalez. Zack Steffen and Graham Zusi have gone from Ludwig Field to professional stardom. Now, with established stalwarts like Steffen, Gonzalez, Zusi and AJ DeLaGarza, along with up-and-coming talents including Eryk Williamson, Donovan Pines, Chase Gasper and Dayne St. Clair, Maryland players will continue to play a major part in the future of North American soccer.
