Why Maryland?
Softball

The Maryland Softball program amplifies the success of its athletes through three main gains: Academics, Athletics and Cultural Education. Maryland offers world-class values and education through the university, the opportunity to compete in a Power 5 conference such as the Big Ten, and the ability to grow in a place surrounded by history and opportunity that is the DMV.

Throughout its 29-year history, the Maryland Softball program has proved excellence time and time again:

Since its inaugural season in 1995, Maryland has produced 766 wins including five postseason appearances.

Maryland has made four NCAA tournament appearances (1999, 2010, ’11, ’12) and served as a two-time regional host in back-to-back seasons (2010, 2011). The Terps most recently appeared in the 2023 NISC Tournament in Fort Collins, Colorado, finishing as semifinalists.

In the six seasons since joining the Big Ten, Maryland Softball has produced nine All-Conference players as part of the 52 Terps overall who have been recognized, including Player of the Year (Kelly Shipman), Pitcher of the Year (Kerry Hickey), Freshman of the Year (Lindsey Schmeiser, Shipman, Jaeda McFarland), Coach of the Year (Gina LaMandre), and First Team players nearly every season.

To elevate Maryland Softball on the national landscape, an indoor hitting and pitching facility is a necessity. With an expected cost of $2 million, this capital project will benefit 25+ softball student-athletes annually.
