Why Maryland?
The DMV

Maryland, Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., combine to form a vibrant metropolitan area that offers the diversity of suburban, urban and rural lifestyles within a short drive. College Park lies in the midst of what’s now called “The DMV” – an area that includes some of the fastest-growing and most affluent counties in the nation.

There is so much, so close for residents seeking an active, vibrant lifestyle.

College Park was recently listed by Business Insider website as one of the best college towns in America to start your career.

In conjunction with the university, the town of College Park has undergone major transitions in the last few years. New amenities and restaurants in The Hotel at the University of Maryland have changed the atmosphere in the area.

Attractions abound in the area, offering a range of activities. Washington D.C. offers national monuments and museums like the world-famous Smithsonian; Baltimore attracts visitors to its Inner Harbor area with the National Aquarium and is the home of Under Armour; while Northern Virginia offers a blend of Civil War history and wineries with a growing business climate.

Washington has become the District of Champions, as the NHL’s Washington Capitals (2018), WNBA’s Washington Mystics (2019) and MLB’s Washington Nationals (2019) have each won championships in recent years. Including Baltimore, the DMV offers teams in every professional sport for men and women.

The Washington Metro allows for easy access from College Park to our nation’s capital and surrounding areas. Six lines run throughout the day from more than 90 stations in the DMV.

Three major airports (Baltimore-Washington International, Dulles International and Reagan National) lie less than an hour from the university.

When combined into a single media market, the Baltimore/D.C. region ranks third in the U.S. in terms of media market size.

More than 175,000 Maryland alumni live in the DMV, creating a vast network in close range.

More than 30% of Fortune 500 companies house their headquarters in the DMV and Virginia was announced as the location for Amazon's HQ2 location.

Maryland’s quaint state capital – Annapolis – lies just over a half-hour from College Park and offers an up-close view of the historic Chesapeake Bay, where boating and sailing meet world-class seafood.

Greater College Park Initiative

Reshaping College Park

Greater College Park is the result of cooperative work between the city, Prince George’s County, state, private developers and the university. This effort links dynamic academic buildings, a public-private research hub and vibrant downtown community. The progress is the realization of the University District Vision, a collaborative effort spearheaded by the College Park City-University Partnership that also features sustainability, transportation, schools and safety. Greater College Park provides new amenities to the area including The Hotel at the University of Maryland, academic buildings and restaurants.
