Why Maryland?
The Department

Yes, athletics at Maryland has always been about success – whether it’s additions to the trophy case or the number of academic honors earned by Terrapin student-athletes, but it is also about personal growth and development. The success comes from a student-centered environment that creates an atmosphere in which students from around the globe can learn, grow and thrive. We invite you to be part of a department committed to leading boldly while honoring our traditions and inspiring pride in all who share the vision of being One Maryland. We invite you to be part of our family.

The level of excellence for Maryland Athletics is staggering:

Six of Maryland’s 47 national team championships have come since the Terrapins joined the Big Ten Conference in the 2014-15 season.

Six of Maryland’s current head coaches have national championships as part of their resumes.

In just eight seasons, Maryland has won or shared 49 regular-season or tournament championships in the Big Ten, third-most of any school in the conference.

In those nine seasons, the Terrapins have produced nine national players of the year, 20 Big Ten Coaches of the Year, close to 70 B1G Players of the Year and more than 250 All-Americans.

The success has also translated academically, as Maryland has had six Elite 90 winners – awarded to the student-athlete with the highest GPA out of the participating teams in the respective National Championship event (i.e. Championship Weekend, Final Four, College Cup, etc.).

Maryland has had nearly 2,000 Academic All-Big Ten honorees in the last seven seasons.

Maryland is one of five schools to win both men's and women's basketball NCAA Championships and one of only two to win men's basketball, women's basketball and football national titles.

Maryland athletics leads boldy:

Maryland is the first and only FBS program to have a Black president (Dr. Darryll J. Pines), athletic director (Damon Evans) and head football coach (Michael Locksley).

Maryland features state-of-the-art athletic facilities and is investing in the renovation and enhancement of venues benefiting each and every Terrapin.

The new Jones-Hill House, home to Terps football, will be a cutting-edge, game-changer focusing on sport science and player development.

The new Barry P. Gossett Basketball Performance Center will be a transformative, dedicated practice facility for both our men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Maryland is a proud member of the Big Ten Conference, home to legendary names and an ongoing tradition of developing strong leaders. The Big Ten has established itself as the preeminent collection of institutions in the nation.

Together, Big Ten universities educate more than 580,000 total students and have 6.4 million living alumni. Big Ten universities engage in more than $10 billion of funded research each year.
