Why Maryland?
Men's Basketball

Legendary players & coaches. Championship banners. Unforgettable traditions. A crown jewel on campus for more than a century, Maryland men's basketball is a rite of passage for students and the surrounding community from an early age.

A tradition of excellence often imitated, yet never replicated:

Maryland climbed to the top of the basketball world when it captured the 2002 NCAA National Championship, led by Hall of Fame head coach Gary Williams ('68), Juan Dixon ('02) and Lonny Baxter ('02).

The Terps have a long history of producing NBA professionals, with 62 players being selected in the NBA Draft since 1954. Maryland has had two players selected with the No. 1 overall pick: Joe Smith (pictured) and John Lucas.

Often imitated, never duplicated. Such is the case for many of Maryland's greatest basketball traditions. Among the favorites are: reading the newspaper during away team intros, the illustrious flag drop and the annual flash mob!

Celebrities and famous alums regularly grace the sidelines at Maryland basketball games, including ESPN's Scott Van Pelt.

Maryland has had a number of its former players represent the United States at the Olympic Games, including Steve Sheppard, who helped lead Team USA to gold in 1976.

The Terps have a long history of claiming conference titles, most recently winning the Big Ten Championship in 2020.

Located in Maryland's backyard, the DMV is nationally recognized as a hotbed for basketball talent.
