Why Maryland?
Women's Tennis

Maryland tennis provides a modern and professional approach to player development on and off the court. Experts in the field of human performance create individualized programs and deliver continual feedback to student-athletes, using a player-centered model for maximizing athletic success. Off-court the unrivaled support system at the University of Maryland offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for academic and personal growth, while on-court a competitive team environment challenging the best that college tennis has to offer in the BIG-10 Conference awaits. All this just minutes from the nation’s capital, at a world-class university, under the guidance of an energetic coaching staff with a proven track record of preparing players for the WTA Tour.

Throughout its 44-year history, the Women’s Tennis program has seen consistent success:

Since joining the Big Ten, the Terrapins have continued to promote excellence with three All-Big Ten selections for the past three consecutive years, and added a program first Big Ten Freshman of the Year in the most recent season (Ayana Akli).

Katie Dougherty has coached at Maryland since 2016, taking over as head coach in 2019. Since her arrival in College Park, she has excelled in recruiting and player development for the Terps. Dougherty has extensive coaching in the Big Ten, also serving as head coach at Iowa and an assistant at Wisconsin.

Maryland has made six NCAA Tournament appearances to date.

The Terps excelled in the ACC, notching 13 All-ACC selections, four singles flight champions, a doubles flight championship pair and an ACC Tournament MVP (Wendy Fine, ’81).

In addition, Maryland recorded national honors with an ITA Coach of the Year, two ITA Senior Players of the Year, along with another two ITA Rookies of the Year.
