NCAA Sweet Sixteen, Tied for first in Regular Season & Big Ten Tournament Title

  • The Maryland women’s basketball team continued its dominance in the Big Ten, winning the program’s third straight Big Ten regular season and tournament titles since joining the league in 2014.
  • The Terrapins made their 13th NCAA Tournament appearance in head coach Brenda Frese’s 15 seasons and advanced to their eighth Sweet Sixteen under Frese. Their record of 32-3 marked their sixth season with 30 or more wins. They remained ranked in the top five in the country in 16 of 19 weeks during the season.
  • Seniors Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and Brionna Jones left their mark on the program. Both of their jerseys were honored in the rafters of XFINITY Center after the Senior Day matchup. Walker-Kimbrough finished fourth in school history in scoring with 2,156 career points and broke the school record for three-point field goal percentage (45.9).
  • Jones finished tied for sixth in program history in scoring with 1,928 career points, third in rebound (1,209) and set a Big Ten record for career field goal percentage (65.0) and led the nation for the second straight season in field goal percentage (69.0).
  • The Terrapins hosted a sell-out crowd of 17,950 on December 29 with they hosted No. 1 Connecticut at the XFINITY Center. A thrilling, one-possession game throughout resulted in an 87-81 victory for UConn. Destiny Slocum led Maryland with 23 points, Brionna Jones scored 19 and Kaila Charles added 18.
  • Jones and Walker-Kimbrough both earned unanimous All-Big Ten First Team selections. Walker-Kimbrough was also voted to the All-Big Ten Defensive Team. Slocum was voted Big Ten Freshman of the Year and along with Charles, was named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team. Jones earned Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors.
  • On a national level, Jones and Walker-Kimbrough racked up the honors, earning All-America nods from the Associated Press, ESPNW, USBWA and Honorable Mention All-America honors from the WBCA. Slocum was named the WBCA National Freshman of the Year.
  • Walker-Kimbrough was drafted No. 6 overall by the WNBA’s Washington Mystics. Jones was drafted eighth overall by the Connecticut Sun.
