The Maryland men’s basketball team punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament for a third straight season in 2017.
Head coach Mark Turgeon has guided the Terps to three consecutive 24-plus win regular season performances. He is the first coach in Maryland men’s basketball history to lead three teams to 24 or more victories in the regular season.
Maryland has finished in the top three in each of its three seasons as a member of the Big Ten Conference.
Junior guard Melo Trimble - who decided to forgo his senior season following the 2016-17 campaign - left Maryland as one of its most decorated players in history. Trimble, a three-time All-Big Ten selection, averaged a team-high 16.8 points per game during his junior season. He was one of 15 players to earn all-conference honors three times at Maryland. Maryland won 79 games during Trimble's three-year tenure in College Park. The Upper Marlboro, Md., native is one of four players in Maryland history to record 1,600 points, 400 assists and 150 steals, joining Terrapin legends Greivis Vasquez, Walt Williams and Johnny Rhodes. Trimble capped his career ranked second all-time in career made free throws (503), 13th in scoring (1,658), 13th in assists (403), eighth in made three point field goals (177), 19th in steals (124) and boasted 92 games in double-figure scoring.
Maryland’s freshman class was a bright spot for the Terrapins all year long. Anthony Cowan boasted a team-high 40 steals and finished eighth all-time in single season assists (123) for a freshman at Maryland. Justin Jackson led the Terps on the glass, averaging six rebounds per game, and ranks seventh all-time in single season rebounds (199) for a freshman at Maryland, topping 2016 Associated Press Big Ten Freshman of the Year Diamond Stone (187). In addition, fellow rookie Kevin Huerter started all 33 games for the Terps and led the Terps with 65 made three point field goals while averaging 9.3 points per game.
The Terps topped Georgetown for the second straight season in the Gavitt Games, downing the Hoyas 76-75 in a thriller at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.
Maryland was a remarkable 8-2 in away games and 11-2 in contests played away from the XFINITY Center.
