ICA Academic Accomplishments

  • The Unofficial “Student-Athlete” Semester GPA for the academic semester was 3.053*.  This is the 3rd consecutive semester higher than 3.000.
  • The Unofficial “Student-Athlete” Cumulative GPA for the academic semester was 3.028*.  This is the 2nd consecutive semester higher than 3.000.
  • The Women’s Soccer program posted the highest semester team GPA of 3.567* while the Men’s Outdoor Track & Field team posted a 3.069*, highest on the men’s side.
  • 98 student-athletes were named Dean’s List recipients by their respective Colleges (98 last fall).
  • 6 student-athletes were enrolled in Master’s level studies (11 last fall).
  • 12 student-athletes earned a perfect semester GPA of 4.00 (11 last fall).
  • 127 student-athletes earned a 3.50 semester GPA or higher (114 last fall).
  • 276 student-athletes earned a semester GPA of 3.00 or higher (234 last fall).
  • 12 sport programs earned a semester team GPA of 3.00 or higher (11 last fall).
  • 10 sport programs earned a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or higher (12 last fall).
  • 80 student-athletes have applied to graduate at the end of the most recent Spring 2017 semester and 106 for the academic year (2016-2017).
  • 250 student-athlete named to the ICA Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll for the spring 2017 semester (232 last fall).
  • 36% (793/2227) of student-athletes earned a spring grade in the “A” range (33% last fall).
  • 71% (1577/2227) of student-athletes earned a fall grade in the “A” or “B” range (70% last fall).
  • 50% (247/491) of student-athletes earned a semester GPA of 3.00 or higher (46% last fall).
  • 15 student-athletes placed on academic probation (16 last fall).
  • 2 student-athletes were placed on academic dismissal (2 for 2016-2017)

  • Academic All-Big Ten – 152 representing fall, winter, and spring sport programs
  • Big Ten Distinguished Scholars – 33 student-athletes representing 13 sport programs
  • NCAA Elite 90 Award Recipient – Zoe Stukenberg (WLA)

2015-2016 NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) Summary

  • The years of 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-2015, 2015-2016 were used in the current 2015-2016 report
  • All sport programs (20/20) reported earned multi-year (4-year) scores of .930 or higher.
    • No APP penalties were assessed or teams subject to postseason ineligibility
  • Fifteen (15) sport programs reported earned multi-year scores of .970 or higher
    • Fifteen (15) sport programs maintained or increased multi-year scores from last year, 2014-2015
  • Seven (7) sport programs earned perfect single-year APR scores of 1000 (MGO, MTR, WCC, WGO, WGY, WTE, WVB)
    • Fifteen (15) sport programs earned single-year scores of .970 or higher
    • Eleven (11) sport programs maintained or increased single-year scores from last year, 2014-2015
  • The MFB multi-year score of .984 is the highest multi-year score since the inception of the Academic Performance Program (APP) in 2003
  • As a result of having a multi-year APR score in the top 10 of all teams in their respective sport, the MFB program received an NCAA National Recognition award
  • MBA earned a multiyear APR of .967, the highest in program history

2016 Graduation Success Rate (GSR):

  • The 2016 GSR tracked all counters (received athletics aid) during a 4 year period (2006-07, 2007- 08, 2008-09, 2009-0109) and tracked graduation for 6 years from initial enrollment
  • The 2016 Departmental GSR is 85% (the same as last year’s 85%)
  • This is the 7th consecutive year that the Departmental GSR has met or exceeded the 80% mark
  • 5 sports earned a perfect 100% (WFH, WGO, WGY, WTE, and WVB)
  • 13/18 sports equaled or improved their GSR score from last year (WCC/Track count once)
  • 11/18 sports reported GSR scores equal to or higher than their respective NCAA Division I average (WCC/Track count once)
  • MFB posted 78% which is highest in program history (since metric started in 2005) and higher than the NCAA Division I FBS average of 74%.
  • This is the 5th consecutive year that WFH has posted a perfect score of 100%, the 4th consecutive year that WGY, and the third consecutive year that WVB have posted perfect 100% scores.

2016 Federal Graduation Rate (FGR):

  • The 2016 FGR tracked all incoming freshmen who received athletics aid and entered UMD during the fall 2009 semester.  Graduation was tracked for 6 years from initial enrollment.
  • The 2016 Departmental FGR (4-class average) was reported at 70%, up slightly from last year’s 69%
  • 10/18 sports equaled or improved their FGR score from last year (WCC/Track count once)
  • 13/18 sports reported FGR scores equal to or higher than their respective NCAA Division I average (WCC/Track count once)
  • MFB posted 67% (tying the highest mark in history), higher than last year’s 63%; and higher than the NCAA FBS average of 61%.
  • MFB ranks 4/14 amongst all Big Ten programs (Northwestern is first at 92% and Michigan State is last at 50%).
