Big Ten Tournament Final, NCAA Quarterfinals

  • The Maryland field hockey squad continued its dominance in the Big Ten, winning its third straight Big Ten regular season crown by going 7-1 in conference play. In their three years in the league, the Terrapins are 22-2 vs. Big Ten teams.
  • The Terrapins made their 22nd straight NCAA Tournament appearance, marking the longest current active streak in the country. In the NCAA First Round, the Terrapins beat Massachusetts, 2-1, in a shootout to advance to the Quarterfinals.
  • Maryland celebrated five seniors in Grace Balsdon, Courtney Deena, Delaney Leathers, Welma Luus and Emma Rissinger. They earned a record of 78-15 in their time at Maryland, played in a Final Four, won an ACC title and won three Big Ten titles.
  • The Terrapins went on a nine-game win streak during the month of October into November to rise to No. 2 in the NFHCA National Poll.
  • Maryland beat No. 1 Connecticut, 2-1, on Oct. 23 in College Park. The Huskies scored five minutes into the match, then Grace Balsdon tied it up under 20 minutes later off a penalty corner. Welma Luus scored the game-winner in the 31st minute as No. 5 Maryland picked up the program’s sixth win over a top-ranked team.
  • Luus was named Big Ten Player of the Year and Balsdon was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. Both were named to the All-Big Ten First Team. Lein Holsboer was voted to the All-Big Ten Second Team.
  • Balsdon, Luus and Holsboer were also named to the NFHCA All-Mid Atlantic Region First Team. Linnea Gonzales, Carrie Hanks and Emma Rissinger were voted to the Second Team.
  • Luus and Rissinger were selected to represent Maryland in the Victory Sports Tours/NFHCA Division I Senior Game on Nov. 20 at Old Dominion, the site of the Final Four.
  • Luus earned NFHCA All-America First Team honors, while Balsdon and Holsboer earned Third Team honors.
  • Luus was also named a finalist for the Honda Sports Award, an award for national player of the year.
  • Brooke Adler, Marissa Cutry, Julie Duncan, Logan Edmondson, Noelle Frost, Carrie Hanks, Lein Holsboer, Delaney Leathers, Kelee Lepage, Welma Luus, Lexi Silver, Emily Thomas, and Anouk van Asbeck were named to the National Academic Squad after earning a GPA of 3.30 through the fall 2016 semester.
