Under the direction of Big Ten Coach of the Year Mark Turgeon, the Terps racked up a school-record 26 wins in the regular season en route to punching their ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010.
Despite seven newcomers to Maryland this season – four of which were freshmen who averaged 13 or more minutes per game – Turgeon led the Terps to a remarkable 28-7 overall record and an impressive 14-4 mark in their inaugural season in the Big Ten. The Terps went 3-1 against teams in the Final Four field with marquee victories against Wisconsin and Michigan State (2). The Terps’ 28 wins on the year marked an 11-game improvement from their 17 victories during the 2013-14 season – the second-highest improvement among Power Five schools.
Maryland cracked the Associated Press poll Top 10 for the first time since Feb. 3, 2003 and was ranked among the Top 25 for 15 consecutive weeks, the longest such streak since the 2002-03 season.
Maryland certainly protected this house, finishing with a perfect 9-0 home record in conference play, which included victories against then-No. 5 Wisconsin, Michigan State and Indiana. Overall, the Terps boasted an 18-1 home mark in the friendly confines of XFINITY Center.
Individually, senior Dez Wells (first team), freshman Melo Trimble (first team) and junior Jake Layman (third team) all earned All-Big Ten honors. Trimble put together one of the finest rookie campaigns in Maryland men’s basketball history. The freshman from Upper Marlboro, Md., led the team in scoring (16.2 ppg), assists (106) and steals (44) and established the Maryland single-season freshman record for free throws made (207). Trimble – a Bob Cousy Watch List finalist and a Wayman Tisdale Award finalist – scored a career-high 31 points against Arizona State in the CBE Classic – the highest mark for a Maryland freshman since former Naismith Award winner Joe Smith recorded 33 points against Rider in 1993.
