MARYLAND ATHLETICS

In Maryland’s first season in the Big Ten, the Terrapins received a new level of support from Terp Nation. Every tickets sport saw an increase in fan attendance while three teams set new attendance records in 2014-15.

The Terps kicked off their time in the Big Ten with the biggest increase in average football attendance among conference schools, filling Byrd Stadium to 91 percent capacity. Maryland saw a 30 percent increase from the 2012 season and played host to two home sellouts for the first time since 2007. While student attendance decreased across the country, Maryland’s student section was at capacity (10,000) for five of six home games.

The men’s soccer team continued to see support from its devoted fans as the Terps ranked first in the conference in attendance. Student attendance increased by 30 percent in comparison to 2013. Women’s soccer also saw success, increasing group sales by over 40 percent and student attendance by 25 percent.

Volleyball finished the season ranked 25th nationally in average attendance, a 289 percent increase from the previous season. The Terps set four of the top-10 attendance records in program history, including a record 4,522 fans against Penn State on Oct. 23.

The Maryland student section, The Pride, won the BTN Home Court Challenge in its first season as the student section who allowed the worst opponent free throw percentage. The student section sold out or was at capacity for seven of nine Big Ten Conference games. Men’s basketball sold out three games for the first time since 2010.

Wrestling and gymnastics combined for the inaugural Beauty and the Beast match, which brought 2,091 fans to the XFINITY Center. Wrestling increased average attendance nearly 150 percent in its first season in the Big Ten while gymnastics increased meet attendance by 60 percent. The gymnastics team also broke Maryland’s single season meet attendance record twice, including 2,207 fans on Feb. 7.

Both the men’s and women’s lacrosse programs saw attendance increase by more than 27 percent. The men ranked third nationally in attendance while the women ranked second. The annual Johns Hopkins-Maryland showdown at Byrd Stadium featured a crowd of 9,343 – the second largest home crowd in a decade.

Baseball saw average attendance go up by 40 percent, and softball set a new single-game attendance record with 941 fans in attendance as the Terps hosted Michigan State on April 25.
