MARYLAND ATHLETICS

Three outstanding Maryland student-athletes were honored with some of the most prestigious awards in the country this year. Two of them, Malina Howard of women’s basketball and Zoe Stukenberg of women’s lacrosse, won the Elite 89 Awards for their sports. Senior Casey Ikeda of the men’s lacrosse team earned the Maryland Medallion Award, an honor given to 20 Maryland senior students (10 male and 10 female) for their work in advancing the interests of the University of Maryland.

The Elite 89 award, founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s championships.

Malina Howard

Howard graduated with her degree in kinesiology in three years this spring. She earned this honor with her GPA of 3.798. She started in all 37 of the Terrapins’ games this season, helping them to a record of 34-3 and their second straight Final Four. She also helped lead them to a school-record 28-game win streak, the Big Ten regular season title and the Big Ten tournament title. Howard received a Sportsmanship Award from the Big Ten and was named to the All-Big Ten Academic Team.

Zoe Stukenberg

Stukenberg holds a 4.00 GPA as a sophomore biological sciences major. A 2015 All-Big Ten team and IWLCA All-Regional team honoree, Stukenberg was fourth on the Terps with 38 goals and second with 22 assists. She started 20 of 21 games at midfield and also had 21 ground balls and 17 draw controls.

Casey Ikeda

A family science major, Ikeda was named a USILA Scholar All-American, a three-time Dean’s List honoree, six-time scholar athlete and two-time conference All-Academic honoree. This year, he helped the Terrapins to an appearance in the NCAA title game and was named Big Ten Defender of the Year, as well as a USILA First Team All-American.

"We’re very proud of our student-athletes for earning these distinguished honors. They are outstanding ambassadors of this University and athletics department and their commitment to excellence in the classroom, on the court or field and in the community is a shining example of what it means to be a student-athlete at the University of Maryland."
