MIKE SHAWARYN
When freshman Brian Shaffer notched the final out of Maryland’s 13-4 win over Purdue on a cloudy West Lafayette afternoon in April, he had unknowingly cemented the legacy of one of his closest running mates.
That out closed the 21st win of Mike Shawaryn’s career and sealed his place as the best pitcher in Maryland baseball history – just halfway through his sophomore year.
"Mike Shawaryn is a first class guy on the field and off the field. He’s very deserving with what he’s done on the field. This couldn’t have happened to a better guy."
- Head Coach John Szefc
“It’s something I personally didn’t really think I would ever achieve,” Shawaryn said. “Coming into last year as a freshman, all I really wanted to do was help out the team. With all the great pitchers that have played here at Maryland, it’s an honor to hold the record.”
The Carneys Point, N.J., native finished the season with a 13-2 record and a 1.71 ERA. Opposing batters were only able to muster a .202 average off the right-hander, who mixes his three sharp pitches throughout his outings.
His 13 wins is a single season Maryland record, breaking the mark he set last season. Shawaryn’s 138 strikeouts is also a school record. He led the Big Ten in both categories.
For his efforts, Shawaryn earned first team All-America honors from the NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. He was a unanimous All-Big Ten First Team selection.
The Terrapin ace’s success translated to the rest of the squad. The Terps won a school record 42 games and won their second consecutive NCAA Regional title. Maryland also advanced to the Big Ten Tournament final.
Shawaryn will continue his development this summer with the USA Collegiate National Team, becoming just the second Terrapin to ever don the Stars and Stripes.
“It’s a great honor for him,” head coach John Szefc said. “Mike Shawaryn is a first class guy on the field and off the field. He’s very deserving with what he’s done on the field. This couldn’t have happened to a better guy.”
