Since his birth in 1932 in College Park, Md., Testudo has dedicated his life to service in the name of the University of Maryland and Maryland Athletics. Perhaps the ultimate testament to his character is the fact that while he has become a beloved figure across the nation, he has always stayed true to his Chesapeake Bay roots.

Despite being kidnapped and held captive in the late 1940s by opponents at rival institutions who disagreed with his beliefs, Testudo remained steadfast in his commitment to the Maryland community and to the United States of America. Through those rough years, Testudo learned the value of patience and sacrifice. He never hid (except for a brief time in a carpentry shed on campus in 1950) and has always stood up for what he believes in.

He is more than just a bronze statue. He is a symbol of passion, responsibility, innovation, determination, excellence, and, most importantly, Maryland Pride. On August 10, 2016, Testudo announced his intent to run for President of the United States of America as a proud member of the Turtle party, and he is asking for your support.
